Florence Airport

Florence Airport, also named as “Aeroporto di Firenze-Peretola,” and formally as the Amerigo Vespucci Airport, is the major international airport of the Italian region of Tuscany in Italy. Today Florence Airport is the 19th busiest airport of Italy. It is located in Peretola, a suburb of Florence, 8 km from Florence city centre. Peretola is claimed as the birthplace of Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian merchant, explorer, and navigator from the Republic of Florence born in 1454, from whose name the term "America" is derived.

The center of Florence can be reached in about 15 minutes by taxi, and in about 20 minutes with the Busitalia SITA Nord "Vola in Bus" bus shuttle operating between the airport and the central railway station of Santa Maria Novella. Also, since the extension of the T1 tram line opened to the public in late February 2019 connecting the central Santa Maria Novella (SMN) train station to the Florence Peretola/Vespucci airport, this has become the easiest (and cheapest) way to reach the center of Florence. For just €1,50 each way you can reach the main central train station in Florence in about 15 minutes. As you leave the airport, head out of the front door and turn left. Follow signs that indicate the T1 tram way stop. At the stop, you will find ticket machines where you can buy your ticket(s). You need to get on the tram and validate your ticket, which means put it in the small yellow machines near the doors and have the machine stamp the date/time on it, thus making it valid. If you don't do that, it counts like riding without a ticket (and subject to fines).

ABOUT FLORENCE

Florence was founded in the year 59 BC by Emperor Julius Caesar. He named the Roman settlement Florentia and used the area as a large Roman army camp. Something you can still see in the street map of Firenze even now. Florentia was especially important, because it was on the Arno River and as a result a fertile valley for the Roman troops. In the course of time, the power of Florence city, which lay first in the hands of guilds and later of the republic, passed to noble families. The most famous example of this is the Medici family. For three centuries, the Medici ruled Firenze and later much of Tuscany. The Medici were a banking family who helped Florence reach its growth. During the time of the banking family, Florence grew into the intellectual and cultural heart of Europe, where an artistic flourishing took place. Well-known names such as Dante, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Donatello and Petrarca date from this period, which we know as the Renaissance.

Florence's museums, palaces, and churches house some of the greatest artistic treasures in the world. The most popular and important sites in Florence include the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Uffizi, the Bargello, and of course the Accademia which is best known as the home of Michelangelo's sculpture of David. The churches of Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce are veritable art galleries, and the library of San Lorenzo is a magnificent exhibition of Michelangelo's architectural genius. Wander some of the oldest streets in the city until you reach the Arno River, cross the Ponte Vecchio, and experience the "newest" area of Florence, the Oltrarno. Be sure to set aside time to see the vast and varied art collection housed in the Pitti Palace. When you grow weary of museums and monuments, head outdoors. Spend a day at the Boboli Gardens or climb the hill to the church of San Miniato al Monte to experience an enchanting view of Florence.

ABOUT PISA

The Leaning Tower has made Pisa famous all over the world, and in addition to the tower, the city offers many other interesting things to see worth at least an entire day. When you first arrive at the beautiful Square of Miracles (Piazza dei Miracoli), your sight will be captivated by the magnificent Tower. Don’t just admire it from below: the climb up the tower is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we highly encourage you to experience. You will enjoy both the incredible climb as well as the amazing views from the top (you can buy tickets in advance as number of entries are limited every half hour)!

Once you have admired the Tower of Pisa from all angles (including the classic picture in which you pretend to support it to keep as a memento), continue your visit to the other monuments in the Piazza: the Cathedral and the Baptistery. Along the perimeter of the square, there is also the Cemetery, the Cathedral Museum and the Museum of the Synopses. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the Arno river and on your way, pass by Clock Palace to enter into Piazza dei Cavalieri, which was once the heart of power in the city and later the headquarters of the Knights of St. Stephen. In the Palazzo della Carovana overlooking the square, the prestigious Scuola Normale of Pisa has its base.

What else to do in Pisa? Eat cecina! It’s a kind of very thin gluten-free bread made with chickpea flour, water, oil, salt and black pepper. You can eat the cecina alone or in a schiacciatina, a flat bread. A real treat you must try.

ABOUT ROME

With its unparalleled history, Rome is the third most visited city in Europe and the fourteenth worldwide. It attracts visitors from all over the world who are impatient to discover the city’s impressive monuments and archaeological sites; not to mention its renowned cuisine and its lively atmosphere. When exploring the Colosseum, visitors will easily imagine how the gladiators fought for their lives in the arena, cheered by the crowd. Rome was called the “Eternal City” by the ancient Romans because they believed that no matter what happened in the rest of the world, the city of Rome would always remain standing.

According to legend, Rome city was founded by the twins Romulus and Remus in 753 BCE. The city is located on the banks of the river Tiber and was founded on top of seven hills; Palatine Hill, Aventine Hill, Capitoline Hill, Caelian Hill, Esquiline Hill, Quirinal Hill and Viminal Hill. Particularly the area around Palatine Hill and Capitoline Hill would later become the centre of power of the enormous Roman Empire. You can find many ruins and excavations here of the Forum Romanum and the Colosseum gives you an impression of how gladiators had to do battle in this enormous Roman amphitheatre. The Pantheon, which is now a church, has its characteristic round, open roof and is one of the best kept buildings from Roman times. And the Via Appia takes you back in time along one of the oldest roads of Rome Italy. Basically, the city of Rome is one giant museum. It is therefore no surprise that the complete historic city centre is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Unique is the ministate of Vatican City, of which the pope is the head of state. This tiny state has an area of just 44 hectares, taken up mostly by St. Peter’s Basilica and St Peter's square, known for the ‘Urbi et Orbi’ speeches by the pope. For many visitors to Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel, part of the Vatican Museums will be the highlight of their travel. The space, where cardinals hold the conclaves to elect a new pope, is adorned with beautiful frescos by Michelangelo. With over 900 churches, each church is more beautifully decorated than the last, with works by the great masters such as Bernini, Raphael, Caravaggio and Michelangelo. As an art lover, you will feel right at home in the Galleria Borghese. All these Roman sights and excavations, the beautiful churches, the Vatican, the fun neighbourhoods like Trastevere, beautiful fountains – including the famous Trevi Fountain – tasty trattorias, a picture on the romantic Spanish Steps and trendy fashion shops make Rome a chaotic and bustling metropolis where you can easily keep yourself entertained for at least a week.

ABOUT AN ALTERNATIVE MILAN

Beyond the Duomo and the Galleria at Victorio Emanuelle II, Milan has many hidden gems for those looking for an alternative path. San Bernardino alle Ossa is a peculiar church in the city center, also known as ‘The Bone Church’. and just a stone's throw from the Duomo The church is known for its strange human skull decorative pieces – rather creepy, but very interesting! Palazzo Invernizzi is a private residence with a beautiful garden, which is home to a flock of pink flamingos. La Scala is one of the most important cultural establishments in Milan so if you want to see an opera or ballet, this is the best place to go in Milan but book in advance!

Terrazza Martini is an elegant cocktail bar on the top floor of the skyscraper in Piazza Diaz. 14 floors above ground level, this rooftop bar offers the best views of Milan, best served with a dashing martini in hand. Bar Basso, founded in 1947, the bar rose to prominence in the 50s as one of the first bars to introduce cocktail culture to a thirsty-for-excess post-war crowd. Since then, its decor has largely remained the same and is also known for inventing the Negroni Sbagliato. The Colonne di San Lorenzo is a group of ancient Roman ruins, located in front of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in central Milan. From here, you can walk to the Navigli canal district (pictured above) which specializes in restaurants, clubs, cafes, and vintage shops. The vibe totally changes from day to night.

Enjoy having a rental car to the maximum! If you rent a car in Milan, check out Lake Como or Bergamo as well or travel further afield to Genoa and the Cinque Terre along the coast. If you're in Florence, consider day trips to other historic, picturesque cities like Fiesole in the hills overlooking Florence, or Bologna, and Perugia. If based in Naples, make sure to also check out Pompeii, Capri, Sorrento and the nearby Amalfi coast.

Italy is not just about culture and cuisine — the country is also home to a large number of national parks, stunning mountains, and awesome beaches for you to enjoy. Check out the Trulli of Alberobello in Puglia for example.

Choosing the right rental car supplier is really important. Sixt, Autovia and Ecovia are the three highest-rated car rental companies in Italy.

Familiarize yourself with the rental conditions such as the mileage and fuel policies before booking a car.

Learn about the traffic rules and speed limits before your trip — they might be different than in your country.

Explore some of the lesser-known parts of the country like the Aosta Valley, Basilicata, Abruzzo, and Marche.
